A visit to Rilla monastery is definitely an unforgettable experience. The Rilla Monastery is the most exquisite example of the monastery art and architecture in Bulgaria. Founded in the 10th century by the monk Ivan Rilski, it has survived periods of both rapid development and decline through the years.
There is plenty of history, priceless art and mysteries at the world-renowned Rila Monastery. Its museum will pleasantly surprise you with rich exposition of medieval documents, icons, religious vestments and the famous Rafael’s cross.
We’ll see also the miraculous icon of the Blessed Virgin (approximately 12th century). If the weather allows it we’ll have a walk in the pristine beech forest of Rilla Monastery Nature Park.
The legends, history, beautiful nature and art are all abundant in and around Rilla Monastery which is included in UNESCO’s world heritage sites. We’ll trace the history of the biggest Bulgarian monastic complex in Bulgaria.
In the courtyard, while admiring the vivid frescoes of the main church, we’ll understand about the worldview and morals of the most notorious Bulgarian painters of the 19th century. Inside the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin church, we’ll see the biggest gilded iconostasis on the Balkans, the grave of the last Bulgarian monarch and much more. Lunch can be also arranged in a nearby restaurant.
